If you’re anything like me then you’ve been spending a LOT of time at home this year. The pandemic has really put the kibosh on travel and its meant leaning a slower way of being. That’s definitely not a bad thing. One of the things that I’ve been really leaning into is self-care, even though I know this term gets overused. When you’re far away from loved ones and missing being able to escape a cold Winter, having a self care routine can be a savior! There is absolutely no need for this to mean expensive luxury items either. Although we are traveling less and saving money right now, so I say pamper yourself if you want to!
Here is my list of the self care products that I use to form part of my daily, weekly and monthly self care moments.
Candles
There is something so relaxing about candlelight. I use them all the time as part of my self care as it aesthetically set the scene for relaxation and self care. If I’m in the bath then candles set the perfect ambiance. But I also like to light a candle first thing in the morning to freshen the room or create a sense of zen for my morning coffee or journal session. I’m currently loving the Glasshouse range
Lavender Essential Oil
I love to use lavender as part of my self care routine to wind down in the evening and signal to my body that its time for sleep. My aromatherapy diffuser is one of my favorite self care products. I just switch it on 30 minutes before bed and the room has a beautiful relaxing scent. I also use a lavender pillow spray when I make the bed in the morning to keep the linen fresh and help my drift off at night. If you have trouble drifting off at night I highly recommend this practice but also check out my list of the best free guided sleep meditations.
Weighted Blanket
If you’re having one of those days when you just cannot get motivated, then I say listen to your body. When I have one of those days all I want to do is get comfy on the couch with my weighted blanket and curl up with a book. I could literally spend all day there, and I have! The weight just feels like a hug and I’m here for it all day. If you happen to doze off, then I would take it as a sign that your body needs rest.
Face masks (the skincare type!)
There is nothing I find as refreshing as removing a really super hydrating sheet mask. Glowy skin is the ultimate in self care because when you feel confident you radiate happiness. I prefer sheet masks because they’re so easy to use and are drenched in serum so you feel like you’re really slathering it on. My top options are Tatcha, Patchology and Go-To. Perfect for relaxing in the bath or sitting on the couch with a glass on Pinot Grigio.
Silk Pillowcase
Your skin and hair will thank you when you wake up sans frizz and creases! This is at the luxury end of the self care spectrum but this investment will last a lifetime. Buying quality over cheap will pay off in the long run with an item like this. When you consider how many hours of your life you spend in bed, why wouldn’t you want to ensure its restful? Trust me on this one, a good quality silk pillowcase is worth every cent!
Linen Sheets
Much like the pillowcase this is an investment item, but again consider the cost per use. How many expensive clothing items have you bought only to only wear a handful of times? … Why I thought a Zimmerman maxi dress was a good idea when living in Tasmania I’ll never know! But the point is, you will literally use these linen sheets every day. They are so breathable and will keep you warm in Winter and cool in Summer. This is practical self care at its finest. Bonus points if you line dry your sheets for that fresh linen smell!
Noise Cancelling Headphones
I understand this might seem like an odd thing to suggest as a self care item, but I honestly use these to relax all the time! If I’m doing a guided meditation then noise cancelling headphones block out all of the distractions. When the cleaning needs to be done, I put on some tunes and dance my way through it. And you’d better believe when we all start flying again that these will be your best friend on board!
