Have you been struggling to write your own powerful affirmations? I completely understand & it can be hard at first to give voice to your biggest dreams and goals. It’s scary when you finally admit what you really want and put that thought out into the universe. Especially if that negative voice pipes up to tell you all the reasons that you’ll never reach your goals. You know the one – I call mine Sandy. Whenever she decides to voice her opinion I just immediately cut her off and say ‘pipe down Sandy!’ But using affirmations is one of the greatest ways to improve your mindset and achieve your goals. If you’re not doing it yet because you don’t know how to start then your in the right place. Keep reading for my go-to tips on how to write your own affirmations.

Frankly my dear I don't give a damn to negative voice

I’ve found that one of the biggest problems that people face when trying to use ‘out of the box’ affirmations is they don’t feel authentic. And I get it. Sometimes when you’re using a set of affirmations that aren’t your own, it doesn’t feel like your own voice. You can struggle to believe what you’re saying. When you write your own positive affirmations you can use language that you vibe with and give it your own personal flair. Doing this for myself has been a game-changer. I use language that comes naturally to me and usually they’re pretty sassy!

When you start doing this for yourself and repeat the affirmations as part of your daily routine, you will start shifting that mindset and manifesting the life you once only dreamed of… If that sounds a little OTT, let me tell you it is 100% possible. You are only limited by your beliefs.

Here are a few tips that I have discovered to help you when you’re first getting started with writing affirmations.

#1 – Determine your themes

You’ll be more inclined to find connection with an affirmation that is meaningful. So make it relevant to what is happening in your life right now. Are you going for a promotion or new job? Try affirmations that help you feel confident in your skills and capabilities. Are you trying to save money? Then think about money affirmations that support your savings goals. Start by making a list of the key themes that are important in your life right now.

Where your focus goes energy flows and that is exactly the power of a well written positive affirmation.

#2 – Use “I” and “My”

Your affirmation is all about you, so the language should reflect it. Starting your affirmation with ‘I‘ or ‘My‘ usually works best and we want to make the affirmation in the present tense to put the focus on shaping your mindset in the here and now.

Consider you’re trying to give up smoking. The affirmation I am not a smoker is far more powerful than saying smoking is not for me. When you say ‘I’ you are speaking about your identity. Therefore when someone asks you if you want a smoke, you’ve already begun to make mindset and identity shifts around this behaviour. So instead of hesitating and saying thanks but I’m trying to quit, you will say thanks but I’m not a smoker.

Never underestimate the power of words and affirmations to shift mindsets.

#3 – Turn your negatives into positives

Have you noticed negative patterns in your internal voice? This is a great place to start because these thoughts are the most damaging ones. We really want to rid these from our subconscious minds. Make a list of any that regularly come up for you. If nothing comes to mind then make notes when you next catch them floating through your mind. Once we’ve identified them, we can turn each thought on it’s head. Here’s an example:

I overspent on my credit card again because I have no willpower. I’m such an idiot!

becomes

I deserve financial stability and I can make it happen.

#4- Use motivating descriptive words to really emphasize your point

The affirmation should feel empowering and positive. The best way to do this is to punctuate with whatever powerful descriptive words resonate most with you.

I personally love to be a bit sassy! One of my favourites at the moment when I experience self-doubt is “I trust my instinct, that bitch is always right”. Now of course this might not be for you, but you get the idea. If your affirmation is ‘I am skilled and capable’, try changing that up to add some motivation. It could become ‘I have mad skills and I am extremely capable’.

#5 – What would your friends and family say?

Struggling to figure out how to speak kindly to yourself or sing your own praises? That’s totally normal! Women especially can find it much more difficult to frame ourselves as strong and confident go-getters. BUT that is the whole point of this exercise- you want to change those old thought processes. Try asking your nearest and dearest who know you best what they think are your strongest qualities/skills/talents. Chances are they will be able to name them up for you if you’re not confident enough in yourself just yet. You can also try thinking about your core values. For me that’s equality, respect, love and honesty. So one of my favorite affirmations is I deserve to be loved and respected, just as I do for others.

I hope these tips help you find more success with how to find your voice and really put some strength behind your affirmations! Hit the comments section below and let me know what your most powerful and sassy affirmation is, because I am here for it!
